Listening to and amplifying the voices of children to advocate for their right to play safely. #

Thanks to a Town Team Movement grant from the Road Safety Commission as part of the Streets Alive Project, VCI ran a workshop with 20 children between the ages of 3 and 10 in Bassendean. They told us about the many and varied ways they like to play outside on their streets with their friends like riding bikes, foursquare, chalk drawing and soccer. We asked them about what makes it safe or unsafe for them to play outside on their streets, and how the adults in their lives could make it easier and safer. The children had lots of great ideas about footpaths, speed limits, street trees and supervision that we are excited to share with the Town of Bassendean.

After the workshops we put on a street party in collaboration with Hello Basso, we closed the road hundreds of residents enjoyed stalls run by kids and families for kids, there was homemade lemonade and treats, art and craft, bubbles, bike tracks, cubby making, book selling, a sausage sizzle from the local men’s shed, and more!

If you're keen to organise something similar in your neighbourhood, get in touch with us today to find out how you can help bring play, safety, and community spirit to your local streets!

The Exploring Australian Adults’ Attitudes Towards Children for a Better Future 2023 which surveyed 1008 adults across Australia was commissioned by the Valuing Children Initiative and conducted by The University of Western Australia, Edith Cowan University and Curtin University compared results from the same survey conducted in 2016.

Adults' attitudes about children have changed to ‘fortunate’, ‘tech savvy’ and ‘honest’ and less ‘selfish’, ‘lazy’ or ‘spoilt’ according to ground-breaking new research into adults’ attitudes towards children.

Australian adults also believe that governments give ‘too little’ consideration to children when making decisions while 75 per cent of adults agreed the best interests of children should be considered in all decision making.
