Tony Pietropiccolo AM responds to The West Australian’s article, exposing the harsh reality of rising child poverty in Australia. #
“Putting food on the table for children has become a problem that few would have thought possible in a wealthy country such as ours.” #
But child poverty isn’t just about hunger—it impacts education, brain development, self-esteem, and a child’s entire future. Research from Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre, commissioned by the Valuing Children Initiative, reveals 15.2% of WA children will live in poverty by 2024, a number that continues to rise. #
Charity can’t solve this alone—we need bold policy change. Australia has done it before—Bob Hawke reduced child poverty from 14% to 8% in just six years. Other countries, like New Zealand, have taken legislative action—why not Australia? #
It doesn’t have to be this way! #
